Aiming to Get Into Smaller Devices, Intel Announces Big Push Into Arduino

Intel’s latest effort to expand beyond its PC roots involves reaching out to hobbyists.


At Maker Fair in Rome, the chipmaker is announcing plans to partner with open-source hardware specialist Arduino. Intel is creating a custom board that pairs one of the company’s new Quark processors with the other hardware necessary to build Arduino-based devices.
“It comes back to the basic premise, if it has computing inside of it, it should have Intel inside of it,” Mike Bell said in an interview.
Even as Intel has struggled to get its chips into phones and tablets, the company is working to land in even-smaller devices. At last month’s Intel Developer Forum, the company announced its Quark effort for wearables and other small computing uses. The Arduino effort will make the first commercial use of Quark.
The company said it will donate 50,000 of its Galileo development boards to 1,000 universities in the coming year and a half. It also plans to sell them through distributors for around $60 or less.
Bell, a former Palm and Apple executive, had been co-leading Intel’s mobile push before shifting to his current role. Bell, whose new products unit is looking at wearables and other devices, says his goal is to get Intel’s chips anywhere they are not yet, as well as into the many new areas where computing is entering.
“My group and I are chartered with helping figure out what’s next for Intel,” Bell said.

Google Acquires ‘Flutter’ the Company Which Builds Gesture Recognition Technology

Google acquires Flutter, a company which builds gesture recognition technology for computers. This came up an year back as Flutter started to build software allowing users to control their computers by making gestures in front of their webcams.
This technology can be used in the company’s Chromebook line of laptops. This is what the company says after being acquired by Google:

A Google spokesperson confirmed the deal to the media, “We’re really impressed by the Flutter team’s ability to design new technology based on cutting-edge research. We look forward to supporting and collaborating on their research efforts at Google.”

ZTE announces U.S. availability for Grand S, nubia 5 hero phones

ZTE quickly ascended the ranks to become a top-five smartphone vendor earlier this year, and it hopes to capitalize on that success with the release of two powerful new smartphones. The Grand S phablet was revealed at CES in January, although at the time there was no indication of whether the phone would make it to the U.S. or not. Ringtones




When it comes to changing sounds on the Nokia Asha 501, ringtones are the first that spring to mind. With two SIM cards in use with the Dual SIM version, and the ability to utilise two phone numbers, it’s actually possible to set a different ringtone for each SIM card. Click ‘Settings’, ‘Sounds and vibra’, and choose the SIM card you want to customise. Then pick the ringtone.

Import your own music




You’re not just restricted to existing ringtones, however, and it’s also possible to add your own music to use as a ringtone. Drag and drop the tunes you want to use into the Music folder on your Nokia Asha 501, and when you go to select a ringtone, click ‘Choose from music’.

Homescreen

Haptic feedback




If you’re new to touchscreen phones, the lack of tactile feedback offered by traditional buttons can feel strange at first. That’s why the Nokia Asha 501 offers haptic feedback – with the phone vibrating gently when you press a button onscreen. Haptic feedback doesn’t suit everybody though, so it’s also easy to turn off. If you don’t like it, tap ‘Settings’, ‘Sounds and vibra’, scroll down and turn the vibration option off.

There are loads of different options available when it comes to customising sounds on the Nokia Asha 501. Along with the ringtones, you can change: Message tone, Email tone, Alarm tone, Reminder tone and Push notifications tone.
